THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA, STABILIZED FOR EVER! Yes you will be able to climb up the Leaning Tower of Pisa again! The committee appointed by the State office of the Ministry of Public Works has given the go-ahead for the re-opening of the Tower, after careful inspection of the famous monument
This great piece of news was announced in a recent press conference which included the participation, among others, of the Mayor of Pisa Paolo Fontanelli, the Prefect Paolo Padoin, the President of the Opera della Primaziale [Cathedral Body] Pierfrancesco Pacini and the Coordinator of the Committee for the Safeguarding of the famous Bell-Tower, Michele Jamiolkowski. The Tower will be open to groups of no more than thirty tourists at a time, accompanied by a guide and under the surveillance of the Opera della Primaziale guides. Visits will start from the end of November 2001, and the cost of the ticket will be twenty-five thousand Italian Liras. Tourists will be able to walk all the way round one of the colonnades, which will be protected by mobile barriers to ensure the safety of those venturing out onto the colonnade to experience the thrill of the lean (in the evening, when the tower closes, the barriers will be removed).
